How do they repair fiber optic lines that are accidently cut?
With hundreds or thousands of strands that transmit light, it seems like it'd be virtually impossible to "patch" a cut the way you would with a normal cut line of pipe, wire, cable, etc...
A fiber cable usually has multiples of 6 fibers (6,12,....288). The fibers are usually grouped in tubes of 6 or 12 fibers. Each fiber is color coded and each tube is color coded.
Fibers can be joined using several different methods. The most popular and most reliable method is to use a fusion splicer to make the connections. The fusion splicer provides a screen with a magnified image of the fiber for alignment and uses heat to melt the two ends together to form one continuous fiber. A protective sleeve is used to cover and support the splice. A metal tray with all the fibers from one tube provides protection. The tray is mounted in a box appropriate for the installation. The tubes and bulk cable are coiled inside the box for support.
A backhoe cut a buried fiber cable where I work. The site was prepared by digging a hole big enought to work in. A contractor was hired for about $15k to splice the 12 fibers. He only spliced the fibers. The site was prepared for him before he got there. His cost included him providing the equipment (fusion splicer which was around $30K and skilled labor). This happened about 12 or so years ago. the equipment is cheaper now and more contactors do this specialiezed work. I would imagine it would be cheaper now with the increase in competition.
