What makes a conditioner a "deep" conditioner?
I am trying to turn my regular condtioner into a "deep" conditioner and would like to know what are some ingredients that I could use to transform it. I am aware of honey for shine, essential oils for scent & therapeutic abilities, as well as extra virgin olive oil for strength and moisture, but am I missing any other vital ingredients? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!
You sound like you've got a pretty good mix there! The one think I'd say though, is that if your regular conditioner is not already a quality deep conditioner to begin with, you won't really be able to transform it into one. You have to already have a good conditioner as your base before you start adding the other good stuff. The ingredients you've listed are more surface-acting/cosmetic types of treatments-- they aren't really for repair or intense conditioning.
What makes a conditioner "deep" or not is the quality and size of its emollients, humectants, and proteins. Size is really important. This is what separates deep conditioners from instant conditioners. Deep conditioners are made of ingredients with a small molecular size so that they can pass easily into the hair shaft to the core. They aren't surface acting, and many of them ask that you use heat to aid this penetrating process. These conditioners are for intensive repair and conditioning- and they are things Kenra Moisturizing Conditioner, Joico K-Pac, etc.
If your conditioner is an instant conditioner, you'll know because the directions will tell you to leave it on for like 5 mins and rinse. They are surface acting and are mainly for smoothing and maintenance. No matter how long you leave this conditioner in, or what you add to it, it will never be a deep conditioner. It'll just sit there on the hair's cuticle not really going anywhere-- and you'll just rinse it back down the drain! These would be things like Vo5/Suave types of conditioners.
One thing that really helps any good conditioner work its best is heat! Try applying your conditioner and cover with a conditioning cap/shower cap for 20 minutes under a warm dryer. Rinse your hair in cool, cool water to help seal the cuticle. Like I mentioned though, this will really only work if your conditioner is already formulated to deep condition.
